This full feature documentary examines everything Pharrell. Back in the day, Lee jeans reigned supreme in every hood. High top fades and gumbies ruled the rap game. Pharrell was six years old when the Sugar Hill Gang introduced the hit single "Rappers Delight" to the entire world in 1979. In the '90s, he and Chad Hugo formed the group the Neptunes and were discovered by Teddy Riley at a high school talent show. In 2001, Pharrell and partner Chad Hugo were named "Producers of the Year" at both The Source Awards and the Billboard Music Awards. 2004 had him walking away with two Grammy Awards: one for "Producer of the Year" and the other for "Best Pop Vocal Album" for he and Chad's work on Justin Timberlake's No. 2 Billboard hit "Justified." And by 2005, he was driving an Enzo Ferrari and a Mercedes SLR McLaren. Can you feel it? Pharrell has exploited his skills to reinvent the hip hop world.Read more

Akon – Muzik Of A Konvict

This documentary follows the the life of Aliaune Thiam, aka Akon. He grew up in Senegal before his family (including his father, jazz percussionist Mor Thiam) returned to the United States and settled in New Jersey when he was seven. There he discovered hip hop for the first time, as well as crime. He was eventually jailed, but he used the time to work on his musical ideas. Upon release, Akon began writing and recording tracks in a home studio. The tapes found their way to SRC/Universal, which eventually released "Trouble," Akon's debut LP, in June 2004. The album was an interesting hybrid of Akon's raps and silky, West African-styled vocals with East Coast and Southern-styled beats. The success of the song "Locked Up" raised Akon's profile, and he followed up in the fall of 2006 with "Konvicted." Soon enough, two of the album's singles, "I Wanna Love You" and "Smack That," had made their way to the upper regions of the Billboard charts. Watch as we see how the only thing Akon is guilty of being Konvicted of is talented.Read more

DOA – Greatest Hits 1978-1998

D.O.A’s Greatest Shits is a collection of videos and live performances documenting twenty years of one of Canada’s founding fathers of punk rock. Fourteen tracks cover the gamut from promotional music videos shown on Canada’s Muchmusic before they became an MTV clone, live performances from the Peppermint Lounge in NYC, Club Soda in Vancouver B.C., and more. The combined total of all the footage is roughly sixty minutes, and it’ll go by pretty fast if you’re a fan. Most of the footage is from the 80s and 90s and I’m personally of the opinion that D.O.A. was at their peak in the late 70s so I was a little disappointed by that, but regardless, for an ex-patriot Canucklehead like myself, it was nice to revisit one of the pillar stones of punk rock back from when and where I was growing up. The newer footage looks better than the older footage and a lot of it was, like the rest of these releases, shot on videotape, but despite some washed out and grainy pieces, the quality on display here isn’t so bad and some of it is actually pretty good. Audio is the same – some good, some not as good – but thankfully it’s all quite clean and clear for the most part.Read more

For the first time in almost 30 years, this film has finally been made available to own on DVD.
